Photographer Creates Mesmerizing Light Tornadoes Using LED Lights and a Hula Hoop

English photographer Martin Kimbell has a knack for creating surreal images, manipulating long exposure techniques and a schoolyard toy in a curious way to make what looks like twisters made of light touching down on the countryside.
The common thought is that Kimbell used drones strung up with lights to create the up-spinning spirals, but Kimbell uses Hula hoops equipped with bright LED lights to make his light tornadoes come to life, according to Colossal.
More than 65 years ago, photographer Andreas Feiniger created a similar effect using long exposures of U.S. Navy helicopters as they lifted from the ground.

Kimbell says his inspiration for the spinning lights was sparked by early work from Stu Jenkins, who used light and fire to create some similar images.
“I had no idea how he created the images at first,” Kimbell told Wired. “I never thought it was Photoshop or photo manipulation, but at the same time I simply couldn’t get my head around how he had created some of the patterns.”
More of Kimbell’s work can be found on his Flickr page, where he has a collection made up of long exposure photos.
